Subject: [*] BatteryMinder1.2.0; keeps track of battery life
BatteryMinder is a tiny program that helps you predict how much time you
have left on your PowerBook battery. It allows you to toggle Appletalk and
Sound with convenient buttons in its unobtrusive little window and is smart
enough to optionally turn Appletalk OFF when it is run and back ON when
quit. This makes Appletalk always load at startup if you put the program
into your Startup folder. Double-clicking BatteryMinder's window puts your
PowerBook to sleep.
BatteryMinder also has the added benefit of being entirely free!

Subject: [*] Faster Finder 7 Resources; make the Finder more convenient
Faster Finder 7 is a free ResEdit document that contains resources to help make
using System 7's Finder a little more convenient.
About The File
This file came about because I wanted some of the enhancements to the Finder
that some public domain control panels or extensions gave me, but I didn't want
the whole heap of new system errors which they also gave me. Permanently
changing certain resources in the Finder has proven far more stable in daily
use.
This is a quick and simple 'hack' which contains resources that, when
copied
into System 7's Finder file (using ResEdit), inhibit the 'zoom rectangles' that
usually appear whenever an item is opened or closed in the Finder. They also
add
a Quit command to the File menu, and these command key equivalents: M for Make
Alias; J for Clean Up; and T for Empty Trash.

Subject: [*] foil-102b; an airfoil generation and display program
This is the ReadMe file for Foil 1.0.2, a Macintosh airfoil generation and
display program. Foil 1.0.2 is System 6/7 happy, meaning it should run
equally well under both systems. Foil is free, but not public domain. I
retain all rights, and it may not be distributed in modified form, or without
any of the files. Since it's free, please read the file "A Note About the
Author".
This version fixes several read/write bugs and should work on all Macs.
Several new airfoils have been included from various sources.
As an added feature to ease the task of entering airfoils, airfoil coordinates
can now be separated with an asterisk (*). I use TeachText to type them in,
and I find its easier to hit the asterisk key on the numeric keypad than to go
searching for the tab or comma keys.

Subject: [*] HyperCuber 2.0; rotates hyper-dimensional objects
HyperCuber 2.0
by Greg Ferrar
HyperCuber is a program which displays and rotates higher-dimensional
objects (like four-dimensional "hypercubes"). It requires a 68020
processor or better, a math coprocessor, and System 7 or better.
Complete documentation for the program is contained in the HyperCuber
Manual file, which is a stand-alone document created with DocMaker.

Here's what's been added since the last world-wide release (version 1.1.1):
Version 2.0 (released May 3, 1994)
* Changed manual format from Word to DocMaker.
* Added user-defined objects (using object file).
* Added support for objects of arbitrary dimension. This was the biggie, and
much of the code had to be rewritten. A lot of the other changes were
a direct result of this one.
* Added support for viewing multiple objects simultaneously.
* Totally changed and improved Keyboard Controls... window
* Totally changed and improved Mouse Controls... window
* Added "Create N-Cube" command
* Split controls into multiple windows, one dimension per window
* Changed the way the Perspective works
* Lost the ability to display axes (sigh...I'll try to add it back later).
* Improved Copy command so it copies object-oriented pictures if antialiasing
is turned off, and copies bitmap pictures if antialiasing is turned on.
* Lots of other minor changes
Version 1.2 (limited release)
* Added fast antialiasing of line segments.
* Added an offscreen bitmap for fast window updating
* Slightly changed default left eye color so it won't cancel itself out.
* Added "click and drag"-style control of the viewpoint (like MacMolecule).
Added Mouse Controls... menu item for customizing this.
* Made scroll bars "live," so the images changes dynamically while the bars
are dragged. Along the same lines, improved the "dynamicness" of the
number to the left of each scroll bar. Basically, whatever you do, the
number, the scroll bar, and the image will agree at all times.
* Made scroll bars wrap around, so that an attempt to go beyond the range of
the scroll bar will wind up at the other end. Shortened range of scroll
bars to eliminate redundant angles (necessary before in order to allow long
rotations; wraparound bars allow infinitely long rotations, if desired).
* Added Keyboard Controls... menu item for customizing keyboard rotation
control.
* Gamma-corrected the antialiasing table-- yields MUCH better looking lines,
with no affect on speed.
* Added menu item to make windows full-screen
* Added menu item to hide or show the menubar.

Subject: [*] Icon Vault Package 1.0; for Desktop icons
What are icon vaults?
Icon vaults are a little-known feature of System 7's Finder. They can replace
an
item's Finder icons without modifying the original item in any way.
When the Finder rebuilds its desktop files, it uses the icons within an
icon
vault in preference to the icons attached to the item, whether an application,
control panel, extension, or document. You can add as many icon vaults to your
Macintosh as you like!
About This Package
This free package contains 17 icon vaults for a variety of applications, games,
control panels, and extensions. Each package includes full instructions on
installation and useage. Perhaps the most useful are the ClarisWorks 2.x/Font
Drivers icon vaults.
If you have any ideas for other icon vaults that you feel could be useful,
please drop me a line.

Subject: [*] NET_Mac2.3.40; implements TCP/IP over packet-radio
The Netherlands, May 3, 1994.
Hello dear reader,
Today I distributed NET_Mac2.3.40.sea.hqx...
For those who don't know NET/Mac... NET/Mac is the application that
supports TCP/IP over packet-radio, which means, that hamradio operators
can use NET/Mac for their wireless TCP/IP network...
In this version of NET/Mac I implemented the following:
- Added 'chat' command
- Enhance syntax-checking for 'IP-number'-style parameters
- Make sure the mailaddress looks like: ...%...%...%...%...@...
- Improved the generation of From addresses for hop-to-hop
This release also includes a new NET/Mac Syntax DA.

Subject: [*] OmegaWindow 1.1; a mouse-free window access program
OmegaWindow 1.1 is a mouse-free window manipulating and application managing
program for Apple Macintosh. OmegaWindow provides keyboard shortcuts for things
that normally have to be done using the mouse. The heart of the OmegaWindow
package is a system extension. The package also includes an application for
customizing OmegaWindow's features. Currently OmegaWindow has the following
features implemented using keyboard shortcuts:
- Move and resize windows.
- Zoom window.
- Close one or all of the windows.
- Bring the back-most window to the front.
- Send the front-most window to the back.
- Swap the two front-most windows.
- Hide/Show the front-most window (Up to 7).
- Hide/Show the front-most application.
- Switch to the next or previous application.
- Go to the Finder.
- Switch from one application to another: allows direct switching
to other applications.
- Activate a specific window: when bringing an application to the
front you can select a window to be brought to the front with the
application.
- Automatically hide windows belonging to other applications.
System requirements
- System 7.0 or later.
- Macintosh Plus or higher.
If you find bugs, have comments, or want to see any new features added to
OmegaWindow, please report it to me by E-Mail (Internet:
ahn@dac.lampf.lanl.gov,
America Online: HyoAhn) or by regular mail (Hyo E. Ahn, 600 San Ildefonso Rd.
#142, Los Alamos, NM 87544, U.S.A.). You can also call me any time at
(505) 665-1483. Thanks.
New plan for the next version:
I am planning to drop the feature of "Hide/Show Front Window 1 to 7" since it
seems that not many users are using. If you object to this plan, please let
me know as soon as possible.
New features and bugs fixes:
Version 1.1 (5/1/94)
- Now you have 30 days of a free trial time.
- Initialization time is extend from one week to two months.
- All of buttons and check boxes are changed to 3D.
- Default setting changed not to hide other applications automatically.
- Memory problem occuring on a monitor with more than 256 colors eliminated.
Now you don't need to give more memory on OmegaWindow application when you are
using a monitor with thousands or more colors.

Subject: [*] Script Optimizer 1.0.1; for HyperCard developers
Changes Since 1.0
* Script Optimizer optimizes "Can't Modify"-protected stacks;
* Sample script display shows effects of each option;
* Reports are more accurate and more detailed;
* Save and Report buttons have been removed (not needed);
* Interface has been tidied up somewhat.
What is Script Optimizer?
Script Optimizer 1.0.1 is a HyperCard stack that can analyze other stacks'
scripts and perform one to three optimizations on them:
* keyword abbrevation
* comment removal
* global checking
Keyword Abbreviation
HyperCardUs long-format keywords, such as "background" can
be abbreviated to their shortest equivalent, such as "bg."
(Any keywords within quotation marks are left as-is.)
Comment Removal
Removes lines that begin with "--", and 'embedded comments'
within a line, such as "on mouse up -- user stops".
(Comment characters inside quotation marks are not removed.)
Global Checking
Often during the development cycle of a stack, some global
variables remain within handlers, even though they are not
used any longer. These unused globals can be removed.
(Global variables that are declared within quotation marks
are not checked.)
Script Optimizer also generates detailed reports on all optimization that it
makes to a stack.

"fourty-three thousand, two hundred and eighty-three."
textNumber can also handle fractions and divisions, so
that it can change "1.42" into "one point four two" and
"2/3" into "two thirds."

Subject: [A] Accessing individual entries of a repeating field in FMPro
Greetings, everybody. Regarding my recent posting about how to access
individual entries of a repeating field in FileMaker Pro, I'd like to
express my appreciation for the following people
bach@sun1.ruf.uni-freiburg.de (Michael Bach),
CSCAIFE%IRLEARN.UCD.IE@PTEARN.CC.FC.UL.PT (Caitriona Scaife),
npolk@mmedia.fjc.gov (Noreen),
RodmanG@mac.ripon.edu (RodmanG),
WMPORTER@Jetson.UH.EDU (William M. Porter)
who, in the best tradition of Info-Mac, have found the time to send me a
reply.
The overall response was that, regrettably, FileMaker Pro does not have any
straightforward way to access, search for, or sort by, individual entries
in a repeating field. I personaly find the lack of such functions a major
problem in an otherwise excellent program. Two workarounds were suggested:
1. Create a second database, virtually identical to the first, except that
in this second one *each* entry of the repeating field in question is
turned into a separate record. This can be easily accomplished using the
option, in the export dialog box, to split repeating fields into separate
records.
This way, if my database has, say, 200 records and the repeating field has
30 repetitions, the second database will have 30 x 200 = 6000 records, all
of them differing *only* on the value of that field which was originally a
repeating one. Then, we can access, search or sort by the value of
individual entries. Also, we can use FMPro's lookup facility to connect the
two databases. The problem I see with this approach is the size of the
second database. Imagine 2 or 3 50-repetition repeating fields in a
database with 2000 records... (Ok, I know what you're going to say:
redesign your database! Notice, though, that sometimes that's not practical
or possible. Then, you'll say, switch to a relational database. My answer
is... Hey, I've already spent money on FMPro!)
2. Use the script function Go to Field. When you specify the field you want
to go to, there's an option to choose what repetition to go to if the field
is a repeating field. The only problem is that you have to know which
repetition you want to go to beforehand; you can't set that as a variable.
Well, thanks again to all the respondents and I hope this information is
going to be helpful to others as it was to me.

I might be wrong here (wouldn't be the first---or last---time) but I

Many thanks to all those who responded to my earlier post saying I

ranged from tossing the Preferences file in the bin to doing a

So I'm forced to the conclusion that the fault lies somewhere deep in

new word processor.
While Power Mac prices are falling over here, and a 7100 looks very
tempting, I fear that is still a bit much at the moment. So I'm forced
to the second solution.
I need a word processing package that will read Nisus native files and
serve as a competant light drawing & DTP package. Reccomendations

Subject: repeating fields in FM Pro (A)
In response to two questions concerning repeating fields in FileMaker Pro
posted by wlt@mercurio.uc.pt.
1) Yes, you can select a given repetition of a repeating field--using a
script. I don't have FileMaker open, but if memory serves, you use the
"select/play" command (or perhaps it's the "go to field") and if the
field you select is a repeating field you'll be given a chance to specify
a repetition. I almost never find this useful, since I very seldom know
for sure which repetition I want (unless I know I want #1), but it's
there.
2) Read the manual to understand how FileMaker searches repeating fields.
There is nothing screwy here, nothing being done other than the way it's
supposed to. A repeating field is SIMPLY A FIELD that allows you to enter
more than one line of data in a very structured way. When you search a
repeating field, FileMaker finds all the records that contain the search
value in any repetition: in other words, for the purpose of searches, the
repetitions in a repeating field are irrelevant. You confused yourself in
your test (which you reproduced in your posting) by putting identical
values ("0") in more than one repetition of the same record. FileMaker
does NOT search only repetition 1: it searches all the repetitions. The
test you conducted produced exactly the conclusion it should have
produced: it found every record that had a value of "0" in it, anywhere.
If you want more precise control over the separation of data, don't be
afraid to abandon the repeating field approach and define a bunch of
separate fields. It takes a little practice and experience to figure out
what sorts of things repeating fields are good for and what sorts of
things they're not good for.

Subject: Voice-Capable Modem Recommendations (A)
I bought from Supra the SupraFaxModem v.32bis in August 1992. Until now, no=
problems related to the non-voice capabilities. The modem works without a=
hitch; they even supplied a new ROM version able to fine tune the detection=
of the BUSY signal. Here in Italy I have a different busy signal on the=
phone line; my previous modem (and previous ROM versions) were not able to=
detect the BUSY, so I was forced to set the modem to X1. Now the modem is=
set to X3 (I cannot set it to X4 because the dial tone is different: the=
modem says NO DIALTONE).
Now the bad news. I happily ordered the Supra Voice Upgrade Kit.=
Unfortunately, it does not work at all. Well, the modem with the new ROMs=
apparently works very well as always.
I e-mailed Supra on 5/3:
BEGIN QUOTE
I received a week ago your Supra DMS software.
I appreciate the $10 deduction, but the software unfortunately "does not=
work as advertised", to say the least (in fact, it does not work at all).
As a summary:
the installation process was painful;
the user interface is not very user friendly and has implementation flaws;
the software hangs.
Let us start with the Diagnostic Report:
[... removed the report not to bore the audience...]
1) Painful installation
I had previously installed the Telephone Manager (got from the=
info.hed.apple.com gopher server) and had the Apple ISDN Telephone Tool=
installed in my Extensions Folder. The SDMS application started up and=
showed me a clueless alert box saying:
Telephone Manager error -xxxxx
Terminal Hdl bad (No Prep INIT?): Must restart Mac
Telephone Manager must be restarted due to Apple architecture design flaw
After restarting and trying everything, it still did not work. Fortunately I=
tried removing the Apple ISDN Telephone Tool from the Extensions folder and=
it instantly worked.
2) the user interface
- is not user friendly
the interface is very "modal", with several modal dialog boxes one after the=
other;
the same dialog is used to edit the messages AND the sounds, so that (for=
instance) the remove button works on both the message and the sound. This=
is confusing.
- has implementation flaws
the dialogs flicker annoyingly even on the Quadra 700.
You may want to associate a 'dctb' resource with the dialogs containing=
dimmed (grayed) items, so that they appear in true gray (vs. patterned=
gray) on color monitors.
You may also want to use the System 7 popup CDEF in order to display=
better-looking popup menus.
3) the software hangs
=46irst problem:
if PowerTalk is not active, the Supra DMS jumps into Macsbug because it=
tries to execute an Unimplemented trap ($AA5D). If Macsbug is not present,=
a bomb occurs.

Address 0126E138 is in the Application heap at 00FB1FE0 at INIT_COMPONENT_M=

It is 00004568 bytes into this heap block:

Second problem:
a phone call comes in, the modem picks up the phone and sends the voice=
message; the status window says: "Recording message"; when the software is=
supposed to save the message, the Mac jumps into Macsbug with a bus error=
inside the _StripAddress trap. The active app is the Finder, so I suppose=
the bus error occurs inside the driver, not the Supra application itself.=
BTW, I have Sound Manager 3.0 installed.
I previously said that the software does not work because of this bug, which=
is perfectly reproducible.

Pete Chane: I don't know if anyone answered your question or not, but
the preeminent DOS/Windows repository on Internet is the "SIMTEL"
collection. The best ftp path is throught oak.oakland.edu, although
there are multiple mirrors around the world. (The SIMTEL collection is
so named for the host which is the prime repository, but, for security
reasons, you can't ftp into it, only send submissions to it. For
getting stuff out, you have to go to the mirrors.)

MS-DOS Announcements (MSDOSANN) is the MSDOS equivalent to Info-Mac.
To subscribe, send email to the robot at listserv@TACOM-EMH1.Army.Mil
with this command in the body of the message: "subscribe msdos-ann"
(of course, no quotes) to add yourself to the list. MSDOSANN is
published almost daily, with about 10-15 files per day, but there is
no "comment" or help section as we have with Info-Mac.

A few fruits of our labor appear this week with announcements of a
TidBITS World-Wide Web site and of Tonya's book about Word 5.
The issue swells to its usual size with information about what
degrees Kelvin means in relation to a monitor, a quick look
at an updated version of In/Out, a review of Robin Williams's
book about fonts, and details about PowerPC-based Workgroup
Servers and a PowerPC upgrade for the Quadra 900/950.
